El Sicario, Room 164 (2010) is a powerful documentary directed by Gianfranco Rosi, winner of the Orizzonti Doc Award at the 67th Venice International Film Festival. The 80-minute film offers a chilling portrait of a former hitman. This man, who once served as a commander in the Chihuahua State Police, has confessed to killing hundreds of people and is a master of torture and kidnapping. Now living in hiding with a $250,000 bounty on his head, he recounts his story from the anonymity of a bare motel room.

awards
🥇 Gold, Graphis Poster Annual 2012
The director approached us with a clear objective: to create a visual identity that would capture both the stark simplicity of the film and its raw, unsettling power. After watching the entire footage, we decided to focus on the most compelling aspect of the film — the subject himself. We opted for a minimalist yet highly impactful approach, using only two contrasting colors. This visual shift from photographic realism to graphic abstraction was designed to intensify the sense of unease and psychological tension.
The poster’s graphic language evokes a sense of evil, mystery, and isolation, drawing the viewer into the psychological world of the hitman. This design concept was applied consistently across the film’s merchandising materials and was later adopted for the cover of the official book associated with the film.
